Factoring Polynomials

Video/Activity Description

Johnny's Math Project -  Johnny attends Washington High where he has the toughest math teacher in the entire school, Ms. Jacobson.  Johnny has been given a factoring project and he has no idea how to compete the task.  Help Johnny and his group categorize a variety of factoring problems.  Working in groups of 2 or 3 you will have to first create a map of all the methods of factoring.  Once the mapping is complete you will be given a variety of problems to factor.  Factor each problem then place your solutions on a sticky note.   You and your group members will need to decide where to place each sticky note on the map.  This is a great activity for your students to visually see the different methods of factoring and have in-depth conversation about which methods to use to factor each problem.

Suggestions to implement in Class

Cooperative Learning Activity - During the activity we suggest you have your students work in groups of two or three.  Each group will need the following materials:

-Posted Notes

-Markers

-Ruler

-Thinkless Teaching Packet

Have the students watch the video and design the poster shown below.  During the video, the students will be given three polynomials at a time.  They will need to work together to solve each problem then place their answer on the posted notes.  Once that is completed they will need to categorize their posted notes on the poster they have created.  After each group has watched the entire video, there should be three posted notes in each section if they have done it correctly!
