Application of Slope

Video/Activity Description

Buying with Bruce - Bruce is having a rough Monday.  Not only does he get stuck in traffic during his trip to work but his car breaks down during his morning commute.  As soon as Bruce was able to make it into work he started doing some research on purchasing a new vehicle.  Bruce’s main concern is how well a vehicle will hold its value.  He has researched the depreciation rates on various automobiles.  Your students will help Bruce by applying their understanding of slope to depreciation rates.  They will work together to design a poster to compare the various vehicles Bruce is looking at.  Next, they will have to use their understanding of slope to calculate deprecation rates of several automobiles.  Finally, they will design a graph comparing all the rates and make a decision of which car Bruce should purchase.

Suggestions to implement in Class

Cooperative Learning Activity - During the activity we suggest you have your students work in groups of two.  They will work together to design a poster to compare the various vehicles that Bruce is wanting to buy.  (The poster is shown below).

Once they have designed their poster have each group give a presentation on which automobile they feel is the best to purchase based on their mathematical decision.  Your students are sure to enjoy this animated video and cooperative learning activity!
